Zurich-based u-blox, a global provider of positioning and wireless communication technologies and services, announced the strategic decision to phase out its cellular IoT business and increase focus on its Locate business. The company’s efforts to find a viable path forward for the Cellular business did not pan out—including exploration of a potential sale, leading to the decision to phase out the business. u-blox’s cellular business currently has over 200 employees and generated revenue of CHF 27 million (US $29.6 million) and adjusted EBIT loss of more than CHF 15 million in H1 2024.

u-blox cellular IoT products were based on NB-IoT, LTE-M, LTE Cat 1, LTE Cat 1bis, LTE Cat 4, 3G, and 2G cellular technologies, in some cases supported by satellite IoT communication. The offerings were targeted largely at automotive, industrial, and consumer markets, with modules available across a range of form factors, cost considerations, and quality standards.

In its strategic review, u-blox decided to continue to improve the performance of its Short-Range Wi-Fi and Bluetooth module business. By further focusing on the Locate business, u-blox intends to be better positioned to drive innovation, leverage its technology assets, and address opportunities within the global positioning market, including autonomous vehicles, industrial IoT, and tracking applications.
