ARC Report Abstract

Overview

The formation of user groups as a venue for sharing experiences and solutions is a long-established practice in industry.  Beginning with traditional business data processing, the practice has extended to virtually every application of computers, networks, software, and hardware, including automation.  While it is common to associate such groups with personal or end user computing, there are also potential benefits in an industrial context.  Most asset owners are interested in the potential of learning by example, by sharing practical experience and success stories.  Along with industry conferences (such as ARC’s annual Industry Forums), user groups provide a well-proven venue and platform to accomplish this goal.

Although user groups are still popular, their nature has evolved to reflect changing needs, expectations, and constraints. Initially rooted in the principle of free sharing of information, they now face challenges, such as the diversity of technology, the need to protect proprietary information, and business pressures that limit the amount of time that the average user can devote to such volunteer activities.  Suppliers have created or sponsored many current groups to supplement the dialog with their customers on product needs and functional requirements.

End users can often benefit from sharing information on a wide variety of automation-related topics.  These include cybersecurity, analytics, technology and solution lifecycle management, performance management, and operational excellence.
