What Manufacturers Need in an IoT Platform

Many manufacturers who make appliances or products for the consumer/housing market recognize that the Internet of Things is poised to disrupt their markets.  It seems to be only a matter of time before hot water heaters, air conditioners, dishwashers, and the like that don't have IoT connectivity will not be competitive in the marketplace.  But incorporating this connectivity into products can present significant challenges to manufacturers who have considerable expertise in all the technologies behind these products, but little or no knowledge of the rapidly evolving Internet of Things technologies and market requirements.  Manufacturers like this, who wish to create connected products in a scalable way, can use  packaged IoT enablement solutions offered by a handful of companies.

One such company is Ayla Networks, whose IoT Cloud Platform enables OEMs to connect products to the Internet.  The platform makes it easy for a manufacturer to IoT- and cloud- connect their devices so they can improve the user experience and also improve the product itself using live in-service data.  There are three parts to the platform solution:  embedded agents, cloud services, and application libraries.

On the device side is a serial to IoT cloud connectivity module.  Ayla's cloud services are built on Amazon Web Services (AWS).  On the mobile side are mobile app libraries for iOS and Android.  Ayla works with leading chip companies to get Ayla's software agent embedded into their communications chips.   There's no programming required for the cloud, a web-accessible dashboard lets manufacturers send data up and get results back.  Then with the native iOS or Android library, the app developer can access the variables defined previously.  Image removed.

According to Ayla's Rod McLane, "Our DNA is in the device communications module, the cloud, and the mobile app.  This allows us to take steps for enhanced authentication and security."  Ayla's IoT platform makes it easier for OEMs to modernize their products with IoT connectivity by reducing the work - and time - needed by hardware engineers and app developers, and by providing cloud services to knit all the pieces together.

Manufacturers who want to add IoT connectivity to their products need embedded agents, communications modules on  products or gateways, cloud services, and  mobile apps.  An IoT platform can be a good way to get there.
