Overview
A digital twin is a digital replica of a physical device. The “Digital Twins for Improving Operations and Maintenance” session at the recent ARC Industry Forum provided an explanation of the types of digital twins for diverse industrial applications. During plant design and build, a project digital twin provides a means to simulate and improve front end engineering and design (FEED), design, construction sequencing, and commissioning. The project digital twin is the topic of this case story.
For operations, the performance twin uses real-time data to assess status for predictive maintenance, process optimization, and operator training. Also, a 3D digital twin of a plant can be used to navigate to a virtual representation of an asset to access information about the real asset.
Design and Build through Handover at LyondellBasell
In August 2018, LyondellBasell officially broke ground on what will be the largest propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant ever constructed. This world-class PO/TBA project in Channelview, TX has an estimated cost of $2.4 billion, representing the single-largest capital investment in the company's history. Once in operation, the plant will produce 1 billion pounds of PO and 2.2 billion pounds of TBA annually. In November 2019, a key milestone of the project’s progress was marked by delivery of a 25-story-tall, 601-ton distillation tower, which will be the tallest piece of equipment to be installed. Over 16,000 tons of steel, 700 miles of cable, 26,000 valves, and 92,000 instruments will be installed over the course of construction. Handover and startup of the 140-acre PO/TBA plant is planned in 2021.
