One year ago at the ARC Industry Forum in Orlando, ARC introduced the Industrial Internet of Things to our audience. Though we had a lot of positive feedback, we also got a few blank stares and lots of questions like "Is it really going to happen in my industry?" and "Haven't we already been doing some of this?"
This year it is once again a main theme of our conference, but there is a marked difference. For one thing, there is a growing realization that this is not a vision of what's approaching on the horizon. Instead, many of our speakers - and these are high level representatives of industrial companies who are actively engaged in this - are echoing a common theme: The Industrial Internet of Things can be implemented today. The technology exists. Sensors, embeddable intelligence and communications, technology platforms, and analytics packages are all readily available.
To take just one example, consider Dr. Reinhold Acahtz' comment in speaking about Industrie 4.0. and Digitalization. Dr. Achatz is Head of Corporate Function Technology, Innovation and Sustainability for ThyssenKrupp, AG and member of the Industrie 4.0 Steering Committee. He said that ThyssenKuupp's transition to Digital would be a decade-long process, but also that "the technological basis is available today."
The other noticeable difference is that many companies now have an active Industrial Internet of Things program underway, and many of them already have use cases they can point to. As an industry, we still have a long way to go, but things are already moving very fast.
