A quick look at SAP HANA Cloud Platform for the Internet of Things

This week at SAPPHIRE, SAP unveiled its Internet of Things platform.  Built on HANA, the new IoT services will allow companies to connect devices at the edge of the network - such as sensors and machines in the plant - to core business systems.  As industrial companies gain experience with the new connectivity, analysis, and execution solutions, many will rapidly begin to transform many of their business processes.  For companies with the right mindset, platforms like the SAP HANA Cloud Platform for the Internet of Things will open up big opportunities for improved asset performance, new service offerings, improved operational efficiency, and completely new ways of offering value to customers.  

The platform allows SAP customers and partners to develop custom IoT applications that leverage the IoT services, cloud integration, and in-memory processing power of SAP HANA and SAP HANA Cloud Platform.  These applications could allow companies to run their own device cloud or to operate a device cloud for their customers.

In addition to providing for custom applications, SAP offers a portfolio of IoT applications such as SAP Connected Manufacturing and the SAP Connected Assets solution, including the cloud edition of the SAP Predictive Maintenance and Service solution, and SAP Connected Logistics software. 

It is also worth noting that Siemens has chosen SAP HANA Cloud Platform to build the Siemens Cloud for Industry powered by SAP HANA Cloud Platform as an open cloud platform for analyzing large datasets in the industry. The idea is to simplify industrial customers’ ability to create additional value from the Internet of Things to help boost their own production as well as product and service offerings. Siemens plans to create an open IT ecosystem for OEMs and application developers based on SAP HANA Cloud platform.
