Swedish telecom provider Ericsson announced a new Enterprise 5G strategy that leverages the offerings of the formerly acquired Cradlepoint business to expand its traditional carrier focus into the enterprise space. The new entity consolidates the former Cradlepoint hardware and NetCloud-based software businesses with the Ericsson Enterprise 5G offering under the Ericsson Enterprise Wireless brand umbrella.
Key components of the expanded Enterprise Wireless portfolio include:
Wireless WAN for fixed locations, IoT, and vehicles (former Cradlepoint)
Cellular-optimized zero trust, SASE, and SD-WAN solutions (former Cradlepoint)
Private 5G networks (Ericsson)
Neutral host solutions (Ericsson)
The Enterprise 5G portfolio’s private 5G and neutral host 5G solutions, designed to deliver business-critical connectivity across both carpeted and industrial enterprises, include the following:
Ericsson Private 5G: A converged 4G/5G private cellular solution with industry and licensed spectrum support.
Ericsson Private 5G Compact: A U.S. CBRS-based offering designed for enterprises that need robust connectivity in environments where Wi-Fi falls short, leveraging a simplified radio architecture (Previously branded as Cradlepoint NetCloud Private Networks).
Ericsson Enterprise 5G Coverage: A neutral host solution, currently certified by all major U.S. carriers, which offers a simplified and scalable architecture compared to legacy DAS.
The Enterprise 5G portfolio leverages the broader Ericsson radio access network (RAN) portfolio, including the Radio Dot System for indoor deployments and small cell radios for outdoor. Simplified subscription-based packaging is available with optional services and feature add-ons.
Customers will be able to deploy and manage the entire Ericsson Enterprise Wireless platform under Ericsson NetCloud Manager, a comprehensive cloud management and orchestration platform focused on 5G. NetCloud offers simplified deployments, unified policy management, and single-pane-of-glass visibility across the network.
New 5G IoT and In-Vehicle Solutions
The company concurrently announced the launch of two new routers—the Ericsson Cradlepoint R980 and S400—designed to provide enterprises with seamless, secure, and scalable connectivity for enabling AI, computer vision, data analysis, and other advanced applications across IoT environments and vehicle networks. Integrated with Ericsson’s NetCloud platform, including NetCloud SASE Secure Connect, these routers are designed to offer seamless deployment, management, and robust, zero-trust security across large-scale IoT and vehicle endpoints.
The R980 is a ruggedized 5G router that delivers high-performance connectivity to vehicles, enabling the deployment of advanced applications such as AI-driven video recognition and real-time data analysis. With its 3rd generation 5G architecture, the R980 is 3GPP Release 16 compatible. The router’s new embedded e-SIM will enable over-the-air carrier switching in future NetCloud releases.
The S400 enables secure connectivity for diverse IoT use cases, including light industrial, digital signage, and building controls. As a semi-ruggedized, compact IoT device, it offers field-expandable interface options such as additional Ethernet ports, a serial port, and a GPIO switch. The S400 includes NetCloud SASE Secure Connect, which enables the instant deployment of a zero-trust network as a part of its subscription license. New NetCloud Cellular Intelligence features deliver automated processes for deployment and troubleshooting to simplify installation and speed up time to repair in very large vehicle and IoT deployments.
