Technology Trends

Key trends and developments in addressing complex challenges were highlighted at the 29th Annual ARC Advisory Group Leadership Forum 2025, where I had the opportunity to interview Peter Rice of Siemens Energy and Damien Beauchamp of 8 Rivers.

Siemens Energy’s Commitment to Scalable CCUS Solutions

Leaders in energy, utilities, and carbon-intensive industries are turning to advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce emissions, making carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) an increasingly essential solution in the evolving energy sector.

Siemens Energy, a major player in the energy sector, is deeply engaged in CCUS, particularly through its partnership with 8 Rivers, working together to advance industrial sustainability for key end users.

8 Rivers' Innovations in Carbon Capture

8 Rivers is developing innovative approaches to CO2 capture and utilization, achieving notable progress in the field. Its key initiatives include:

  • Allam Cycle Technology: A novel process that captures nearly all emissions from combustion power plants and other emitters including blending of waste feedstocks.

  • Carbon Utilization: Transforming captured CO2 into valuable products, such as chemicals and fuels.

  • Cost-Effective Solutions: Reducing the cost of CCS to make it more accessible for widespread adoption.

  • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with companies like Siemens Energy to enhance the impact and deployment of their technologies.

Peter Rice highlighted the benefits of an "all of the above" approach, encompassing direct combustion and post-combustion capture technologies.

Damien Beauchamp explained 8 Rivers' distinctive approach, which generates pure CO2 directly from turbine exhaust. By using CO2 to power the turbine, this method removes the need for energy-intensive absorbents, improving efficiency and reducing costs.

This marks a shift in how CO2 is viewed—turning it from waste into a valuable resource, creating new opportunities for monetization and industrial use. It underscores the potential of integrated systems to both lower emissions and improve operational efficiency.

International agreements and collaborations play a vital role in driving advancements in CCUS technologies.

Many global companies are engaging in cross-border projects to develop expertise and build confidence in these solutions. This exchange of knowledge is essential for accelerating innovation and scaling deployment. Additionally, policies like Europe’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which incentivizes the import of low-carbon fuels, add complexity to the regulatory landscape but also create new opportunities for CCUS initiatives.

Damien Beauchamp highlighted the bipartisan support for their technology in the US, as it tackles both environmental challenges and energy security. He emphasized the need to balance affordability, reliability, and clean energy objectives. 8 Rivers' approach includes enabling end users to utilize CO2 for enhanced oil recovery, creating an additional revenue stream. This underscores the importance of strategic planning and exploring diverse business models to accelerate CCUS adoption.

The rising global energy demand, driven by emerging economies and data centers, underscores the need for a comprehensive approach that combines conventional and clean energy solutions. In response, leading organizations are adopting flexible and adaptive strategies that navigate geopolitical uncertainties and economic fluctuations while staying committed to decarbonization.

The insights from Siemens Energy and 8 Rivers offer a detailed perspective on the current landscape and future potential of CCUS. Effective decarbonization strategies require a combination of innovation, regulatory navigation, and international collaboration, enabling industries to harness CCUS technologies to meet sustainability goals and support a cleaner energy future.
