COPA-DATA this week released zenon OpenDCS, a new generation of open process control systems tailored for the pharmaceutical, life sciences, and process industries.
According to the company, zenon OpenDCS cannot be directly compared to a traditional DCS, which typically bundles hardware and software from a single supplier. In contrast, zenon OpenDCS provides only the software component, which can run on a wide range of hardware platforms—including virtualized environments—making it hardware-agnostic. Essentially, zenon OpenDCS is a software-defined automation DCS, likely the first of its kind.
Commenting on the product release, ARC Research Director David Humphrey said, “Classic DCSs are complex solutions consisting of a wide variety of software, hardware, and field instruments. They are closed systems that bind the user to a decades-long investment. But times are changing, and systems are moving to open architectures. zenon OpenDCS takes a fresh look at the concept and value of a DCS. Most importantly, its open architecture means that users can mix and match hardware and software as they like while avoiding vendor lock-in. I’m curious to see how COPA-DATA develops zenon OpenDCS as a process solution in the coming years.”
