Executive Overview

ARC Advisory Group is developing a new study focused on industrial electrification. The research began with interviews across industries where electrification holds strong potential. This strategy report summarizes key findings from those conversations. Companies are actively investing in energy efficiency—through hardware like high-efficiency motors and drives, and digital tools such as digital twins and advanced process control.

However, challenges remain, including high electricity costs, grid limitations, system interdependence, and immature technologies. These hurdles are creating clear opportunities for solution providers. To succeed, they must offer holistic approaches beyond products, supporting feasibility studies and long-term transformation roadmaps. Electrification often requires process redesign and collaboration across sectors, positioning automation companies as strategic partners in the energy transition.

The report details real-world electrification initiatives, from electric cracking furnaces and hydrogen production trials to electric kilns and electrified steam generation, illustrating the varied deployment stages across industries. It emphasizes the critical role of digital technologies and waste heat reutilization in making electrification more viable and sustainable. Despite persistent challenges, rising investments in renewables and electrification technologies are driving momentum.

ARC recommends that end users start with clear electrification roadmaps and target process optimization, while solution providers should invest in consultancy and integration capabilities. A holistic approach—combining digital platforms with electrification hardware—is essential for successful transformation, positioning automation companies as strategic partners in the energy transition.

The Research Process

ARC is conducting a new market research initiative on industrial electrification. We began by engaging end users from selected industries to understand their electrification roadmaps, ongoing initiatives, challenges that they face, and the technologies they are exploring. Insights from these interviews, combined with secondary research, are summarized in this  strategy report.

From this first phase, we defined the scope of relevant technologies and analyzed the solution capabilities of companies that can support end users in their electrification journeys. This led to the development of a second strategy report, Champions Radar – Industrial Electrification Solutions.

Both reports will be shared with contributing end users and made available to companies subscribing to our advisory services. Additionally, we plan to conduct a quantitative market research study as the next step.
