Just as it says on the tin - apart from those stories which aren't actually analytics, but are interesting anyway...A quick roundup of stories that have tickled my fancy over the last week:
- What the 'Internet of Things' Means For Small Business. Personally, I think many new technologies provide more opportunity for small businesses then they do threats or challenges. IIoT could follow that pattern. Couple of simple examples in this article of how small companies have taken advantage of this emerging technology.
- The Genius Of Zero-Billion-Dollar Markets. Just to reinforce the point of the article above, this article talks about the need to carve our your own unique, defensible space in the market.
- Mesosphere's new big data solution: Add Spark, hold the Hadoop. I blogged a note of caution about getting too giddy about Hadoop a few weeks ago. Frankly, I see next to no Hadoop usage in industry right now. And, as I noted in my blog, Hadoop and big data aren't synonymous - you can manage big data without the elephant. And here's a new proposed solution that does just that...
- Machine Learning comes to livestock. In my machine learning blog earlier this week, I included a phrase that clearly rung a bell for Brad Saeger. Brad validated the statement that I made about more data being a good thing for machine learning and included an example in his blog. Admittedly livestock farming isn't an industry that we follow here at ARC, but I thought his example was insightful nevertheless...
- Hortonworks buys the startup behind the NSA-developed Apache NiFi to target IoT data. In other Hadoop-related news, Hortonworks (a leading commercial Hadoop vendor) just made an acquisition to ease the acquisition and on-boarding of IoT data.
- One of the world's biggest airlines just invested in an internet of things startup. Just caught my eye this one, KLM making a technology investment. Not clear if this is just an investment for the sake of it, or whether there is a strategic fit here...? Maybe a sign of things to come though, with Industrial IoT users make strategic acquisitions.
