David Cruikshank, head of SAP’s Co-Innovation Lab (COIL), provided an overview of the COIL’s activities at the
SAP Best Practices for Oil and Gas conference in Houston. COIL is a collaboration service initiative hosted by SAP to help partners incubate ideas to solve industry problems. The first lab was established in 2006 and SAP now has 13 locations worldwide.
The typical scenario for a COIL project is a Proof of Concept (PoC) for a new and innovative way of integrating solutions with SAP' business solutions, either on the technical level or on the level of the business process. Regardless, the PoC will always require a technical landscape to install and integrate all required technical components for the actual PoC tests.
Based on input from the project request form, the COIL data center experts analyze these technical requirements and define a landscape architecture with required SAP components and room for the solution installations.
COIL provides a modern, state-of-the-art data center architecture for virtual landscape provisioning. Each project landscape is securely set up in its own network segment within the COIL DMZ and is therefore isolated from landscapes of other parallel projects. The partner company will be able to access the landscape using assigned users for VPN access.
One recent kickstarter project set out to improve operations effectiveness by addressing maintenance procedures and brought together technologies from
Mtell and
Rolta, as well. Rolta provided technologies allowing the operator to specify KPIs and visualize the information. Mtell provided the machine learning technology. SAP provided the S/4HANA platform and PM EAM. To facilitate the work an end user provided two years of real time history for 40 pumps. The team’s goal was to facilitate better decision-making by predicting the behavior of assets, by correlating historical and real-time data, in order to maximize operational effectiveness without compromising compliance, safety, and the environment. The team used the historical data to train the system to predict impending issues with the pumps. Based on the tests, the system predicted failures as much as 30 days in advance and in some cases found failures the end user did not properly record.
SAP chose COIL to be their platform of knowledge exchange and seeks to build a collaborative community to share learnings and supplement product offerings. By sharing the risks, participants overcome some of the barriers to experimentation like funding and personnel resources. As a result, COIL enables more agile trials projects through this “ecosystem of dynamic capabilities.”
COIL currently has 30 projects underway globally. These projects range from IIoT-related, to mobility, artificial intelligence, security, and safety.
