In last week’s
blog about IIoT and multiphase flow metering (MPFM) we asked for suggestions or comments from suppliers or owner-operators on how they thought IIoT enabled solutions could add value. Some interesting feedback was received from Carl Cook, President/CTO of
IntelliDynamics, who commented “Actually, the IIoT enables *virtual* multi-phase flow metering, such as we provide. The customer can invest in one meter on a test separator and we then model each well's production vs. the myriad of process conditions and put those models on-line to estimate production on any time frequency the customer wishes. This saves the customer "big bucks" because MPFM's are VERY expensive, considering purchasing, engineering, installation, calibration, and on-going maintenance”.
It was clear that I was not wearing my IIoT hat when writing parts of the MPFM study since IIoT can also play a role with physical multiphase flow metering solutions for which the original blog was written as well as VFM.
ARC’s recently published global market study on
Multiphase Flow Metering Solutions did cover the emerging market for virtual flow metering (VFM) solutions. We provided an estimated market size range and listed a number of suppliers, such as SPT (a Schlumberger Company) with its
OLGA simulation engine and Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies with its
LedaFlow simulation engine. IntelliDynamics was not one of them. In addition, there are other suppliers believed to be developing and/or marketing VFM solutions including FMC’s FlowManager, ABB, Roxar’s Fieldwatch, Belsim’s ValiUpstream, EnSys Yocum’s VMSS3, Baker Hughes’ Neuraflow and MSi Kenny Virtuoso/VMS solutions, among others.
For those that may be interested in reading more about physical MPFM solutions, we recently published an
Insight report on the topic last week which highlighted how MPFM are proving their value in upstream oil & gas.
