Today, two influential IIoT organizations - Plattform Industrie 4.0 and the Industrial Internet Consortium -announced alignment of their architectures, and a plan to collaborate moving forward. This removes another potential source of confusion for global industrial companies seeking to develop and grow their businesses by leveraging the Industrial IoT. It also reinforces the importance of having a common reference architecture, and shows that there is already a conceptual alignment about how the various pieces fit together. Finally, it demonstrates that there is a great deal in common between the "Industrial Internet of Things" and "Industrie 4.0" efforts.
The Reference Architecture Model for Industrie 4.0 (RAMI4.0) and the Industrial Internet Reference Architecture (IIRA) are seen as complementary models by both organizations. Together, they have created an initial draft mapping which shows the direct relationships between elements of the models, and a clear roadmap to ensure future interoperability. They also identified several potential areas of collaboration going forward.
