GE Digital Going After Multiple Industries with the Predix Platform

GE Digital is very serious about IIoT, and is focusing on at least ten major industrial sectors with its edge to cloud IIoT strategy which features the Predix platform and solutions enabling IIoT development and implementation across industries from aviation and manufacturing to oil & gas, health care, and power generation. This represents a significantly expanded go to market initiative for GE Digital that is clearly moving beyond establishing IIoT and Predix only within GE manufacturing businesses.

The primary components of the Predix architecture are:

  • Predix Machine: a software layer that enables communication with the industrial asset and the Predix Cloud. This also includes local applications such as edge analytics, sensors, and industrial controllers that can be installed on factory gateways.

  • Predix Connectivity: This service allows machines to talk to the Predix Cloud via a virtual network comprised of cellular, fixed line, and satellite technologies. This service is for situations where a direct Internet connection is not readily available.

  • Predix Cloud: a secure global cloud infrastructure that is optimized for industrial workloads and meets regulatory requirements.

  • Predix Services: industrial services that developers can use to build, test, and run industrial Internet applications. It also provides a micro-services marketplace where developers can publish their own services as well as consume services from third party providers.

GE Digital has established a fairly robust developer community for Predix which includes around 2200 developers, 25 early adopter projects with various customers, systems integrators, and OEMs. These types of early adopter projects are a good approach to demonstrating real value propositions across a range of industry sectors, and is an important initial step in realizing the value of a smart connected IIoT ecosystem.

The Predix Platform and architecture powers other GE IIoT solution areas such as Asset Performance Management (APM), GE Automation, and the GE Brilliant Factories initiative, all of which are a part of GE's overall Industrial Internet strategy. At this juncture Predix is focusing on predictive analytics, maintenance, and APM, but going forward I see this technology as addressing much larger and expanded processes such as continuous process improvement, Big Data analytics, prescriptive analytics, enabling the digital twin , and even autonomous systems.
