Overview
Industrial IoT (IIoT) is “crossing the chasm” and moving beyond the early adapter stage into mainstream applications. To best exploit this new capability, management in industrial end user plants should address the question: “Who has responsibility for IIoT?” This Insight focuses on end users for predictive maintenance, rather than on OEMs using IIoT for aftermarket services.
Predominant IIoT Application
IIoT involves a set of enabling technologies for edge computing, net-working, and cloud computing using data and analytics. The predominant application today is predictive maintenance to reduce unplanned downtime and improve safety. The business drivers involve assuring the equipment’s capability to produce products and the associated revenue.
Companies in the process industries typically have maintenance or reliability engineering functions. An important part of their activities is to encourage other functions, such as control engineering or maintenance, to improve equipment reliability. With IIoT-enabled solutions, the reliability organization can more effectively control its own destiny by designing, developing, and implementing predictive maintenance applications that take equipment reliability to a new level.
Limited Access to the Control System Design by Others
Equipment, automation, and the control systems typically execute specific manufacturing steps that are critical to producing products and obtaining the associated revenue to fund the business. When this equipment doesn’t function properly, it gets a lot of attention fast – which can include attention from executive management. As a result, the control engineers responsible for this equipment are usually very protective and often limit the ability for others to access the equipment and make changes.
