Deeper Dive into How Operational Analytics Can Drive Operational Excellence Upstream

As a follow on to last week’s blog, we wanted to take a little deeper dive into how operational analytics, when employed by a strong technology partner, can help upstream oil & gas companies to improve their operational performance and realize operational excellence. Jan Erik Johansson, Industry Advisor Upstream, E&R at TCS gave a great presentation on “Analytics for Operations Excellence”. Jan Erik talked about the challenges of non-productive time (NPT) that still plague the upstream oil & gas segment and how time spent collecting, gathering and preparing data - different data types from different databases from different operational groups – comprises two-thirds of an engineer’s time and most of that time is inefficient (and costly).

Jan Erik talked about how the development of an automated field data services solution deployed at a gas project in Australia provided production centric data services by 1) maintaining data dictionary & data flow diagrams, 2) maintained proactive management of data losses, 3) overseeing of management of data changes, and 4) employed analytics and visualization via data quality digital dashboards. In order to maximize results, TCS developed key data quality business rules that empowered the client to begin to see data as an asset. Without divulging confidential client data, TCS indicated that there were several key takeaways in terms of real value delivered – including:

  • Improving field data to corporate data storage collection rates from 65% to over 92%, without additional investment in the collection and consolidation tools

  • Resolving the data issues caused by planned outages: with over 25 known field outage events occurring each year, understanding and mitigating the risk of lost data through the data continuity process has saved over 100 man days per year

  • Analysis has enabled client to correctly identify nearly 98% of all field data outage causes – this is precursor to stronger pattern recognition/prescriptive analytics strategies

  • TCS provided analysis that has led to 10% reduction in Pump off to Pump on times, thereby reducing pump down time and increasing production

TCS indicated there is continued work to make further enhancements in the area of predictive analytics for field operations. ARC is strong believer that companies operating in upstream and midstream oil & gas should consider partnering with strong technology partners that possess deep domain expertise in oil & gas operations and also possess strong and deep benches in the area of complex systems integration, machine learning and analytics and petro-technical data integration.
