The luxury of pharmaceutical blockbusters is over. Development and clinical trials have become more lengthy, risky and expensive related to increasing regulatory pressures, reducing the profitability of drugs because the periods they can be effectively sold has become shorter and shorter. In addition, both governments and patients look for favorable performance/price ratio’s putting pressure on sales prices.
PAREXEL, a company with diverse activities ranging from clinical research, via medical equipment, via strategy consulting to media and communications, gave a
keynote on the use of the PI System in PAREXEL clinical research activities at the recent
OSIsoft EMEA User Conference.
PAREXEL Clinical Trials believes that research processes have not kept up with technology advances and that the lack of information sharing throughout drug development impedes efficient and timely collaboration. With the increase of wearables and sensors, the increasing size of data sets, the potential of data transfer via Internet, and the need of on-going visualization, a great potential for shortening and improving the quality of the development cycle lies ahead.
To transform the execution of clinical trials in the bio-pharmaceutical industry, PAREXEL and OSIsoft have formed a strategic alliance partnership to develop a next generation sensor platform, based on the PI System - PI Coresight, Asset Framework, PI Integrator for Business Analytics, and the PI SDK.
Two early applications were the patient activity-monitoring dashboard from real-time sensor data from wearables and a tracking system for condition sensitive treatments during transportation of the client. This approach reduces the cost and the drop-out rates of patients during trials, because of unavailable or ineffective medication.
PAREXEL was recently awarded the clinical innovator of the year, because of a case to bringing a drug to market shorter by three years, saving actual lives of cancer patients.
PAREXEL’s novel approaches should inspire other innovation-oriented bio-pharmaceutical companies, and pave the way for significantly shorter and less expensive drug development.
