ARC Advisory Group recently attended the 10th Annual MIT Energy Conference in Cambridge, Massachusetts, sponsored in part by Tata Consultancy Services (see related ARC View). The well-attended keynote presentations and panel sessions all featured solid content, and we participated in many lively, thought-provoking discussions on topics ranging from renewable energy and smart grid, to the future of oil, gas, coal, and nuclear generation.
Robert Armstrong, MIT Professor and Director of the MIT Energy Initiative, provided the welcome address. This focused on the dual energy challenges ahead: meeting dramatically increasing global demand, while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions related to the way energy is both generated and consumed. Mr. Armstrong highlighted the need to bring together the three pillars of academia, industry, and government to meet the dual challenge facing mankind.
Internet of Energy
Thomas Siebel, Founder and CEO of C3 Energy (also founder of Siebel Systems), kicked off the keynote presentations on Friday with a discussion on how his company leverages Big Data and machine learning in the smart grid and oil & gas sectors to increase operational efficiency, reduce operational costs, and improve productivity and profitability, while enhancing the end customers' experience with the energy companies. Siebel talked about how the outdated traditional grid is siloed, inefficient, and lacks interoperability.
