Executive Overview
Changing market dynamics have compelled companies to focus on their core competencies and outsource many non-core activities. Thus began the era of offshoring IT infrastructure and support services; and India soon emerged as one of the favorite destinations for IT offshoring. Off-shoring information technology (IT), and the corresponding IT-enabled services in India have come a long way since inception. Engineering services (ES) providers based in India can now provide innovative and differentiated products and help make up for the current skills shortage in developed regions.

The ES industry has evolved in the last decade. In the early 2000s, India was viewed as a cost-effective source for commodity IT skills, thus some non-critical IT functionalities were outsourced to the country's global service providers (GSPs). Over time, India-based GSPs evolved into solution providers that could understand and help solve customers' business problems. More recently, global clients consider India's GSPs for more strategic roles like co-innovation and joint development projects, often based on a risk-sharing model. GSPs based in India have proven that they are ready to take up challenges, primarily due to the availability of engineers, service-oriented suppliers, and domain expertise.

Today's ES providers are expected to provide a variety of services such as concept development, design, automation enablement, and maintenance-related services. ES can help customers across many major industry segments save time and money and simplify complicated manufacturing activities.

When selecting a service provider, customers usually start by creating a list of needed engineering capabilities, addressing certain business challenges, or seeking improved and innovative solutions.

Organizations often have to decide to choose between carrying out the engineering services in-house through a global in-house center and out-sourcing them to an ES provider. The decision should be based on a thorough understanding of the specific challenges faced, such as adapting to newer technologies, catering to new geographies, pressure from com-petition, cost containment, and lack of in-house capabilities.
