According to Mohammed Batouq, a network and control systems engineer for Saudi Aramco's Abqaiq Plants, the facility leveraged real-time and historical data from its distributed control systems (DCS) and other production assets to implement key performance indicators (KPIs) that operators use to optimize energy consumption and significantly reduce the costs, time, and resources required to manage energy challenges. Abqaiq Plants, Saudi Aramco's largest oil processing facility, processes and stabilizes more than seven million barrels of crude oil per day.
Challenges and Objectives
While energy rich, a strategic goal for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is to maximize energy utilization to support future economic growth. This led Abqaiq Plants to identify potential benefits from using a manufacturing and operations intelligence solution that could help reduce the facility's energy usage. The largely manual energy management system already in place was giving many false warnings about energy consumption and consuming time, money, and resources.
