Water Sustainability a Pressing Need Globally

Water, a finite and rapidly depleting resource, is basic to life, the environment, and development. Water can pose a serious challenge to sustainable development if not managed efficiently and equitably. Water sustainability ensures a continuous supply of clean and potable water for living beings and helps maintain the ecological balance.

Threats to water security come from many directions: rapid urbanization, escalating demands from industries, climate change and environmental degradation, and tension over scarce water resources that flow across demarcated boundaries. All these factors impact water quantity, quality, and availability.

This Insight delves into the efforts made by various organizations (governmental and non-governmental) to create awareness on the imperative for water conservation and promote water sustainability. The United Nations (UN) has been very active on this issue. In addition, associations like Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI), and Alliance for Water Stewardship have made some inroads in this direction.
