IIoT begins with sensor data and ends with back-end systems that perform analytics for intelligent decision support.  A current hot topic is how to manage data on its journey through the IIoT.  But many edge devices, including sensors and actuators, are currently not smart, meaning they are not connected to the internet.

For this reason, so-called "intelligent gateways" are taking on an increasingly important role in the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT).  These gateways connect legacy systems to new systems by first collecting data at the network edge, then acting as a filter to analyze and normalize the data before forwarding it to the next level, or even directly into the cloud.  Several companies are developing a range of IIoT gateway designs that enable connectivity between new and legacy devices.

Siemens recently exhibited its new SIMATIC IOT2000 gateway for industrial applications at the Hanover Fair.  The SIMATIC IOT2000 is an open platform gateway with Yocto Linux support using the Intel Quark processor as core.  It can even be expanded with Arduino shields and miniPCIe cards.  The open system supports several communication protocols and the possibility of programming in high languages for customized solutions.  Due to its compact design and DIN rail mounting, the gateways can be integrated into existing machines and plants.
