You'll see IIoT in the today's Digital Oilfields - when you know what to look for

After attending OTC it became apparent to my colleagues and I that although the concept of the Industrial internet of Things (IIoT) may not be fully understood or embraced by many upstream oil & gas companies, some industry participants (typically larger IOCs) have been working on initiatives that contain some of the very components that comprise IIoT.

After recently talking with some folks at Weatherford, one of the top five oil field service providers (based on market cap) and the number #1 supplier in artificial lift optimization based on ARC’s research, it became apparent that there is a fair of amount of IIoT in the oil & gas IOCs that are deploying various digital oilfield initiatives such as i-Field, Integrated Digital Oilfield, Field of Future, Smart Fields, etc.

Although Weatherford, and most oilfield service providers, partners with either a 3rd party or one of its customers to handle the analytics (i.e. pattern recognition, etc.) component, they believe the real value lies in combining their deep domain and engineering expertise in upstream with the analytics capabilities of others, since only being able to effectively interpret and take action on the data analyzed makes it truly valuable information.

Some of the examples Weatherford highlighted contain solutions that I believe comprise IIoT enabled components.  These include production optimization, downhole measurement and monitoring for optimization at the wellhead, and asset management related applications, among others.

ARC plans to continue to blog about these and other real world examples since companies such as Weatherford are interested in learning more about IIoT and how they can continue to leverage the power provided to help their customers drill wells faster and cheaper, increase production, improve recovery rates, improve organizational and ecosystem level collaboration, and realize greater profitability in these margin compressed times.
