PTC's Connected Manufacturing Transformation Journey

ARC recently attended a briefing by PTC's manufacturing team and came away with an entirely new perspective of where PTC is moving to in the manufacturing space, and, moreover, from the perspective of IIoT and the smart connected factory. If one were to ask me just a few years back what PTC offered in the manufacturing space, I would have said that its manufacturing solutions were limited to WindChill MPM (manufacturing process planning) and a partnership with GE Intelligent Platforms (now part of GE Digital) for MES solutions. With PTC's new IIoT focused Agile Manufacturing Service, it's manufacturing solutions will be significantly expanded, and completely in sync with PTC's IoT platform solutions for connectivity (Kepware & Axeda), analytics (Coldlight), IoT business apps (ThingWorx), and augmented reality (Vuforia). This is PTC's IoT strategy of connect, analyze, create, and experience.

PTC is applying the concepts of the digital thread and the digital twin to manufacturing processes. Their manufacturing transformation strategy would include digital process planning and simulation provided by Windchill MPM, but would add connectivity to factory assets, equipment, and smart sensors; applications for mobility, virtual 3D models and augmented reality; and machine learning-based predictive analytics. They refer to this as the Connected Manufacturing Transformation Journey, and this vision is based on a framework of processes and solutions that would bring manufacturing into the IIoT ecosystem. The framework would focus on manufacturing domains such as product and process planning, production execution, and asset/equipment performance. The framework would follow transformational stages from informed (descriptive, monitoring, visibility); to optimization (closed loop process simulation, smart connected machines/equipment, predictive maintenance, and augmented reality-based maintenance); to transformed (autonomous operations, digital twin).

PTC appears to have many of the solutions and applications in place to begin this transformational journey involving manufacturing and IIoT. It will be very interesting to follow the progress of their journey into the IIoT enabled factory of the future.
