Honeywell announced on the 27th it was establishing a new business focus on helping customers improve operations with the Industrial Internet of Things.  The key with the Honeywell announcement is the focus on improving customers' operations.  This is a theme that is becoming prevalent in the market when speaking about IIoT; focusing on customer outcomes.

The new  business is aptly named "Digital Transformation" and looks to leverage Honeywell's process experience and knowledge to aid its customers in rapidly deploying technologies to allow them to better manage and analyze data, with the outcomes of safer, more reliable and more efficient operations.

This announcement follows the Honeywell Pulse product announcement which the company advertises as IIoT Ready.  Indeed, it certainly leverages mobile devices to keep personnel informed the current state of manufacturing operations. However, Pulse is only one tool of many Honeywell has to offer. Honeywell also lists its DynAMo product, its cyber services, and its Assurance360 services as part of the portfolio it can leverage.  These pieces aren't the only tools in Honeywell's belt, though.

One differentiating aspect of the Honeywell Process Business is it capabilities when paired with UOP for oil and gas related processes. This adds a level institutional process knowledge that is above and beyond most other automation vendors. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in the market, especially given Honeywell's strong presence here.

Indeed, many automation vendors have jumped on the IIoT bandwagon and for good reason. It's not hype. IIoT has already shown users dividends. Manufacturers are realizing benefits like increased uptime with applications involving rotating equipment. They are also witnessing the benefits by improving their supply chain through the use of "Control Towers."  More applications are being developed as end users gain confidence that the benefits are real and the realities of the current business practices are challenged. There is, however, plenty of opportunity left at the plant floor as well.
