Vimal Kapur, President of Honeywell Process Solutions, opened the Honeywell Users Group with a discussion of IIoT and an overview of what Honeywell is doing for their customers. He began by noting that change is all around us and that for perhaps the first time in history we have better tools available to us in our personal life than we do at work. He also noted that IIoT enables users' access to the right technology at the right time, and with the acceleration in technological advances, this "real-time" access becomes more critical.
Mr. Kapur's IIoT message is one of evolution versus revolution. Technology is evolving at a quick pace, which is causing faster obsolescence. However, the cost of changing automation hardware has been so prohibitive, that many customers continue to run their operations with 40+ year old technology. Honeywell's message is to evolve the system. He then spoke about several operational technologies Honeywell offered to address this.
He then moved on to the 'Connected Ecosystem.' This is a theme that has been talked about for a few years. Mr. Kapur described the ability for contractors, suppliers, workers, and machines to interact in a more fluid way using cloud technologies and introduced a few of Honeywell's cloud-based offerings. The key point Mr. Kapur made in this part of the discussion was that users should not do this for the sake of doing it (hype), but that this connectivity should be leveraged based on the three main goals of our industry: The reliability, the efficiency, and the safety of the manufacturing processes and people. The technology is the means to the end.
When it comes to the use of any technology, focus on the business goals.
