Forget IT-OT Convergence, Physical-Digital Convergence is the real opportunity

Industry Trends
Jim Hepplemann, president and CEO of PTC, has been pushing a lot of boundaries lately, but I really like the way he's thinking about the evolution of technology and its implications for industrial companies.  This week at the LiveWorx 2016 event in Boston, he set the stage for the event by talking about the merger of the physical and digital worlds.  I think this is a great way to think about the Internet of Things.  Too often, I see companies get hung up on various dimensions of IoT (or Industrial IoT):  What about platforms, what about embedded systems, what about communications, what about edge vs. cloud, etc.  To be sure, these are all important.  Alternatively, some companies focus on the big picture:  "Digital Transformation."  Also very important, but sometimes hard to comprehend. Or the fact that software is critically important.  Or the fact that IT technologies from the Enterprise side are also useful in production, and maybe the internal support organizations should cooperate:  IT/OT Convergence.  Yes, it's a clear trend.

No, Jim's got it just about right when he says "The DNA of products is different than it used to be."  He also noted that things that were always compartmentalized before, are now converging and there's no going back.  IoT is much more than a way to connect, monitor, and automate products, it's also a new way for people to experience products.  And that's the reason Jim has led PTC into the virtual reality/augmented reality space over last year or so.

As the products change, industrial roles and responsibilities change as well.  New systems of systems, and systems of products, can come together to deliver new value.  Everything changes, including engineering, manufacturing, operations, sales, service, and marketing.  It's a challenge, an opportunity, and a threat.

As I said, I think Jim's got it right:  Physical-Digital Convergence is the real opportunity.
