IIoT Platform for Service Operations Management

Regular readers of this blog have undoubtedly read posts referring to IIoT creating new business opportunities. This one states, “Industrial IoT (IIoT) provides original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with new visibility that enables value-added services,” using platforms for devices and data.  Another blogger suggests that, “human productivity is also an area that has huge potential for improvement thanks to IIoT-related services.”  However, methodologies in which field services are delivered and performed have not kept pace with this technological change.

The fact is, task execution by field service technicians has not changed in decades. The vast majority of field service activities are stuck in reactive mode.  To improve the efficiency of staff in the field as suggested in the previous post, mobile field service workers will also require platforms that support all field service execution data regardless of source or format.  The application must provide bi-directional exchange to permit local data collection as well as integration with real-time analytics and related systems to deliver detailed work instructions on a mobile device.  The goal is to first capture the most granular level of asset performance and health data for diagnosis as well as to continuously build the knowledge base, and secondly, to deliver a step-by-step work process to the service technician at the point of work thus creating a continuous cycle of service operations optimization.

ARC believes the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) concept is applicable to the delivery, management, and execution of field services. Standardized platforms reduce the development investment required to implement a solution.  PaaS that complement existing ERP, EAM, and content management systems will create value by continuously improving an enterprise’s unique methodologies, processes, and technical expertise captured in other systems.

paula picA platform suitable to fill this gap in field service execution has emerged – the industrial-grade service operations management (SOM) platform from Mobideo offers a new approach to the capture, analysis, and delivery of data for field service execution. It does it by integrating and synthesizing all unstructured standard found in operating procedures and work process instructions with other relevant data sources such as ERP and EAM, and delivers it to the knowledge worker at the point of work, via any mobile device.  The Mobideo platform also enhances data and process governance, regulatory compliance, visibility, and the decision-making process.  It effectively supports the continuous cycle of knowledge engineering and process improvement for both OEMs and owner/operators necessary to take full advantage of the IIoT’s potential benefits.

ARC expects the IIoT will impact all aspects of an industrial enterprise as it migrates from traditional product-centric acquisitions to service-centric business models. OEMs will require new tools and solutions on which to build a continuous cycle of improved value delivery.  A SOM platform may be the key that unlocks the door to improve field service task execution.
